Vedenta Resources, metallurgy in IndiaVedenta Resources is a holding with companies specialized in the extraction of minerals and the production of metals for the vast Indian market. The companies Balco and Malco operate bauxite mines, which they transform into alumina and aluminium. Balco and Malco boast 21% of the Indian market. As regards the company Sterlite, they own copper mines and smelting works. This company have a 42% interest in the Indian market. Finally HZ1 extracts zinc and lead and represent 75% of the Indian market

Vedanta Resources plc was listed in London in December 2003. We are a diversified and integrated FTSE 250 metals and mining group with annual sales of $1.9bn. Our principal operations are located in India, where we have a major market share in each of our main metals: aluminium, copper, zinc and lead. There are also substantial copper operations in Zambia and a copper mine in Australia.

Vedanta has a strong track record in managing operations and improving costs and output. Our Indian zinc and copper operations rank in the top quartile of global cost efficiency.

In addition to the existing operations, Vedanta has extensive expansion projects across each of our metals. Several major projects announced last year are now being implemented. With an investment spending of $3.1bn, half of which has already been completed.

At the time of listing, Vedanta set out a carefully structured strategy, to which the board and management remain committed.

As one of the largest metals and mining groups in India and with mines in Australia and Zambia, the Group is committed to managing its business in a socially responsible manner. The management of environmental, employee, health and safety and community issues in respect of our operations is central to the success of our business.

Environment
The company aims to reduce the impact of its activites on the environment wherever feasible. The majority of our sites are certified to the international environmental management systems standard ISO 14001. This includes the requirement that environmental impacts are identified and that there are ongoing programmes for improvement accross key impact areas.

Health & Safety
We are proud of the fact that we have won numerous safety awards. In March 2002 Sterlite's copper smelter at Tuticorin received the British Safety Council five star award, the first copper smelter in the world to achieve such a rating. In September 2003 the National Safety Award was presented to HZL's Debari zinc smelter by the Indian Ministry of Labour for outstanding performance in industrial safety.
